More than one third (1/3) of the federal government’s assets are student loans according to the 2015 audited financial statements of the federal government. Hidden in Obamacare, the federal government took over student loans from banks and private lending institutions. Previously, banks loaned students or families money for education and the federal government guaranteed the loans made by the banks. Now banks service loans, but the federal government owns them. Total assets of the federal government are $3.2 trillion and two categories of student loans ($880.6 billion+134.7 billion) total $1,015.3 billion. Due to the Obamacare change, this category of loans has grown over 300% since 2007. At least 4 key points to make here:

(1) The cost for the federal government to service these 17 million student loans was $864 million as of fiscal 2012, the latest data I could find.

(2) Student and education loans are the largest category of assets, larger than all government and military lands and buildings. Balance sheet net worth is assets minus liabilities. This $1 trillion in loans along with $2 trillion in other assets has the effect of reducing the negative net worth, i.e. the official national debt, of the federal government to negative $17 trillion. (The net worth of the U.S. government is negative $17,000,000,000,000.)

“Total liabilities ($21.5 trillion) consist mostly of: (1) $13.2 trillion in federal debt securities held by the public and accrued interest and (2) $6.7 trillion in federal employee and veteran benefits payable.”

“The “public” consists of individuals, corporations, state and local governments, Federal Reserve Banks, foreign governments, and other entities outside the federal government.”

Total liabilities does NOT include liabilities that are not yet funded, that is, commitments to pay which have already been made by the government but which so far are not recorded as liabilities on the balance sheet nor have a source of funding. That number is unknown but could be 3 to 10 times higher than the $21.5 trillion. We can’t know the total until the Federal Reserve is audited, among other agencies.

(3) The Economist reported in June 2014 that over 7 million of these student loans were in default. That is a 41% default rate.

(4) The government has taken over a failing business and made it worse. As a result of Obamacare, the government now has about $1.2 trillion in student loans on its balance sheet, costing over $864 million per year to service the loans and 41% of those loans are in default.

Meanwhile, education is becoming more expensive and lower quality due to a variety of factors, especially artificial, excessive demand. According to BestValueSchools.com, the cost of a college education has increased 4.5 times (450%) in the last 30 years. In comparison medical costs have jumped more than 286% while the consumer price index has jumped 121%. But, larger numbers of college graduates are not landing jobs in their area of study.

Now, at least one candidate for president, Bernie Sanders, is campaigning on promises to make college “free.” The expectation was already out there that college education should be free due to statements by president Obama. Providing “free” college would cost taxpayers more than $1.2 trillion to forgive the outstanding student loans, an amount equal to one fourth of the annual tax revenue taken by the government, plus at least $595 billion per year ($35K per year X 17 million) in additional operating expenses because even the people who today pay for their education would demand it for free. And, those student loans would probably not be classified as assets, meaning the quality of the nation’s balance sheet would take a negative slam from the point of view of creditors and bond ratings agencies. What’s the next step? Nationalize universities to install price controls and capture their endowment funds?

But, over and above all of the above, it appears that the Obama administration used Obamacare in a sleight-of-hand shell game to bail out the banks once again. The government removed seriously non-performing loans from the bank’s balance sheets, and it is now paying the banks hundred of millions of dollars to service those loans. And at least sometimes it is using the IRS as a collection agency.

For their part, the auditors of the federal government financial statements point out yet again that the government is not on a sustainable path.

Thoughts on negative interest rates: Fed Chairman Janet Yellen said negative interest rates are still on the table. If the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve go to negative interest rates on deposits, they would be penalizing saving. The results in America could be disaster. Savers are already penalized by artificially low interest rates. But imagine if you had to PAY interest on the money you have saved in your bank account, in your money market fund, on the money in your ATM account, on the cash in your brokerage account, on your T-bills.

Already, if truth be know, our deposits are legally a loan from you to your bank or broker, for which the bank or broker normally pays interest to you. If instead, you have to pay the banks to hold your money, that alone could cause a major run on the banks, as it has done in America before, and in Greece recently. People would be incented to withdraw their money and hold it or spend it. The government, as it always does, would call a bank “holiday” and close the banks to stop the run, as it has done before in America and as was recently done in Greece.

Can’t happen you say?  Yes it could. Cash dollar bills could be eliminated, as already proposed elsewhere. All transactions could be required to occur by credit or debit card. There is already a move afoot to do that.  The governments use the excuse that this is required to prevent money laundering and illegal drug cartels. A fee could be charged on ALL financial transactions on your debt and credit cards. Many cards already charge fees on international transactions.  And, most already charge an annual fee for use of the card.  The institutional processes are already in place.  If these fees exceed the amount of interest earned on your deposit, then you would be loaning them money and paying them to borrow your money, i.e. negative interest rates.

Think of it like a Costco membership card. Today, you can buy an annual executive membership card from Costco that gives you the privilege of shopping at Costco stores, and that card pays you annually more than the cost of the annual executive membership card IF you spend more than about $700 per year. Essentially, this little card game gives you a discount for shopping at Costco if you spend over a certain amount. But, what if the discount became a fee instead? Would you still buy the Costco executive membership card if Costco sent you a big bill each year instead of a check? I think not.

In the larger national budget context, investors in the U.S. Treasury’s T-bills, notes and bonds would be paying interest TO the U.S. Treasury instead of the U.S. Treasury paying interest to its investors (e.g. your money market funds, your bank, ETFs, China and rest of the world). In that case, the U.S. government would have incentive to go further and further into debt, for example to roll over or recall bonds currently paying about 2.6% TO bond holders and instead issue in their place Treasury bonds which require by law that the bond-holder pays the government 1%.  Reminder, at this moment, U.S. T-bills pay investors near zero% interest.

But it gets worse. The U.S. dollar is the world’s most widely held reserve currency. There are trillions upon trillions of U.S. dollars in the central banks of all nations. If negative interest rates on U.S. dollar deposits are allowed, it would cause a rapid Weimar-Republic-like run on the dollar (not only on the banks). There would be a rapid and massive inflation (loss of value) spiral downward on the value of the dollar in international foreign exchange markets. Imagine a banana from Costa Rica or a loaf of bread costing $100, a barrel of oil costing $10,000, gasoline costing $100 a gallon.

Negative interest rates would also crash the prices of all U.S. dollar denominated bonds, not only Treasury securities. What price would you pay for a security that guaranteed that you must pay by law 2% per year to the buyer of that security?

Help me out. I can think of only three events that would prevent this negative interest rate scenario from occurring:

First, of course, if negative interest rates are prohibited.

Second, the U.S. dollar (or an alternative the U.S. dollar) becomes instantly and by surprise the new world currency, that is, the ONLY reserve currency on the planet, with availability only for a limited time for pre-determined exchange rates for old U.S. dollars and all other old currency. Countries have done this before, but only within single countries.

Third is a major war, which would drive more money into U.S. dollars, a so-called flight to safety.

Can anyone think of other alternatives?

If we have negative interest rates, we would be paying the government to push us further into debt. How is that not slavery? And, if you refuse to pay your share, there is debtors prison for impeding a federal officer in the prosecution of official business.

Helping Americans vet and choose candidates in the primaries may be the highest and best use of social media.

Long before the first debate, I was an original “Run Ben Run” supporter who helped and donated to get Dr. Carson to run. I think he is a very good man. And so is Jimmy Carter. Unfortunately, good men are not often good political leaders. I don’t know why that is.

This primary election process, including the usually excellent discussions hosted by Hank, is very healthy for us and the country. In my almost 67 years, Americans lost the general election in the primaries. People did not pay attention to the primaries. Not many people anyway.  The pollsters, the media, pundits and the operators of the two political parties chose a Democrat and a Republican. Then, in the general election, whether the Dem or the GOP candidate were elected, it did not matter much to the people on the street. Romney is not very different from Obama. McCain is not very different from Obama.

Government just grows and grows and becomes more expensive with more and more regulations, more laws and always more wars and more debt. Meanwhile, freedom for citizens continues to erode. It became more and more difficult to save any money to take care of your family. You had to take more and more risk to get ahead, or not, except of course if you worked for the government or in banking.

Thousands of years ago, the philosopher-teacher Aristotle said, “Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society.” And that is still true today.  So, these vigorous discussions during the primaries are very healthy for individuals as well as society; these open discussions in social media expose the information that all of us gather on the candidates so that we the people have a chance to vet and choose the candidates for the general election instead of the wealthy and the powerful.

G.K. Chesterton has been one of my heroes of thought.  In “The Blunders of Our Parties”, Illustrated London News, 1924-04-19, he said, “The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.”  He also said, “Tolerance is a virtue of a man with no convictions,” which is opposite the teachings of high schools and colleges of at least the last 30 years.

Speak up young folk. If you try, you can learn more online than anywhere else. And the price is right.

Men and women of wealth and in robes behind guarded walls and gates acting under color of authority are actively engaged in harming us. They are diverting your attention to symbols like walls instead of the harm they are persuading you to cause to yourself and your children and grandchildren.

Already inside American borders there are between 30 million and 60 million people who are here illegally. These people will add between $3 trillion and $ 6 trillion to the debt burden that is laid on American taxpayers over the next 10 years. The federal government’s IRS collects less than $ 4 trillion per year in taxes from all sources, and the Obama administration has been spending $1 trillion more each year on average than it is taking as taxes. In eight years, the Obama administration will have doubled the official US federal debt, doubled the debt accumulated by all previous administrations. The federal government has put American taxpayers in debt totaling $19 trillion today, officially, which does not include myriad unfunded liabilities like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and a long list of welfare programs to people, corporations, governments and international agencies and unknown commitments to “too big to fail” like the Federal Reserve. The U.S. is spending far beyond its means to repay.

The American people have allowed their government at all levels to spend far beyond our ability to repay, beyond even our grandchildren’s ability to repay. But that huge debt is not even the biggest part of our burden. An exhaustive detailing of the debt our government has laid upon its people is a subject for another paper. The point here is that more debt is harmful and that we are being harmed by holier-than-thou charlatans who are actively diverting your attention.

Most of these holier-than-thou charlatans have their income guaranteed for life. They want you to ignore the 90 million legal American citizens of working age who are unemployed, and to ignore the huge debt burden already on your shoulders and your children’s and grandchildren’s shoulders. They want to make you feel so guilty about the poor of the third world that you will take on even more debt, in the process harming yourself and your family and your fellow American who happens to be unemployed.

These wealthy charlatans in robes and under color of authority are leading you off the path of righteousness. God will never cause you to harm yourself or your family. God tells us to not be a debtor.

You are already helping to pay unemployment pay and other welfare benefits for millions of your fellow citizens who are unemployed, and you are paying for that with money that you have borrowed. You are already paying billions of dollars in welfare benefits to millions of illegal aliens already here, and you are paying that with money that you have borrowed. These charlatans want you to further increase your debt burden and bring in more people and support them with trillions of borrowed dollars. These charlatans, known as Popes, Presidents, Congressmen, men of God and candidates, want you to spend more than you will ever earn, more than your children and grandchildren will ever earn. In other words, they are trying to make you feel guilty so that you will harm yourself and your family.

And if you follow these charlatans, you and your family definitely will be harmed. You will be indentured for life. But, those charlatans, they will not be harmed. Their incomes are guaranteed for life. Most of them have guards to protect them and their families. They divert your attention to a wall and to a messenger, instead of focusing on the harm you will be doing to yourself, your family and your fellow Americans. They want you to shoot the messengers rather than to question the charlatans.

There would be no need for a wall or a fence if there were no sanctuary cities and welfare benefits to attract illegal immigrants here. There would be no need for a wall or a fence if there were no companies and government agencies firing Americans and hiring immigrants for lower wages. There is no reason for a wall, or for immigration and border patrol agencies, when there are sanctuary cities and companies where immigration laws are ignored. There is no reason for a Homeland Security Agency if the border is open and immigration laws are ignored. There is no reason for a Transportation Security Agency if the border is open and immigration laws are ignored. These agencies with their jackboot SWAT teams could be replaced by garbage collection and clean up squads to clean up after the inevitable chaotic and destructive mess that will be created by unassimilated people. You will be fighting off these people. The charlatans have their walls, their private airplanes and their guards. The agencies and police, no matter how well intentioned individual members might be, they will not be there in time to help you and probably they will not be allowed to identify the perpetrators.

God, nor any righteous man, causes anyone to harm themselves or their family. You harm yourself and your family by taking on more debt than you can repay in your lifetime. Debt is anathema to liberty. Allowing open borders, sanctuary cities and lawless immigration is taking on more debt than can ever be repaid. Americans would do well by God by helping ourselves overcome our already extensive debt and becoming able to help our fellow unemployed citizens, our veterans, our misguided youth, and the disadvantaged already among us.

A bipartisan commission of the U.S. Congress led by civil rights icon Barbara Jordan, the late Congresswoman from Texas, a Democrat, prepared and issued recommendations which were endorsed by President Clinton. In addition to the recommendations listed below, the Jordan Commission called for cutting the LEGAL immigration level to 550,000 per year in total, about half of America’s current LEGAL immigration level, and halting illegal immigration. Congresswoman Jordan was very vigorous in her statements.

The Commission’s Guiding Principles
1) Clear goals and priorities must define U.S. immigration policy;
2) Effective policy means enforcement of immigration limits;
3) Regular review is needed to ensure flexibility to adjust to changing circumstances in the United States;
4) Immigration policy should be comprehensible and its implementation efficient;
5) Sponsors are responsible for ensuring that immigrants do not become burdens on the American taxpayer;
6) Immigration policy must protect U.S. workers against unfair competition from foreign workers, with an appropriately higher level of protection for the most vulnerable in our society;
7) Both temporary and permanent admissions categories must be seen as integral parts of a cohesive immigration policy;
8) A sound immigration policy supports Americanization, meaning that immigrants share with Americans such values as the belief in liberty, democracy, and equal opportunity;
9) Fundamental immigration reform requires a period of transition to get from the present system to the new one.

The Commission’s Recommendations
Following the above principles, the Commission recommended the creation of a “credible, coherent immigrant and immigration policy” and a “credible, efficient naturalization process” which included the following:
A scale back of family chain-migration by implementing a prioritization of nuclear family relationships to determine who will be admitted through family-based immigration. Spouses and minor children of US citizens would continue to be admitted as first priority.
Elimination of other family-based admission categories, including:
Adult, unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens;
Adult, married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens;
Adult, unmarried sons and daughters of legal permanent residents, and;
Siblings of U.S. citizens.
A focus on the admission of highly-skilled individuals whose skills would benefit our society. Recommended the elimination of the admission of unskilled workers and elimination of the diversity visa lottery.
Immigration admissions level of 550,000 per year, to be divided as follows:
Nuclear family immigration 400,000;
Skill-based immigration 100,000;
Refugee resettlement 50,000.
Stressed that deportation is crucial. “Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave.”
