During my ages 9 through 14, we lived in a semi-industrial area of Brooklyn, near the docks in Bay Ridge. Families identified by their ethnicities: Irish (Green and Orange), Italian, a few leftover Norwegians, a few Puerto Rican families, one Jewish family. Our family was Greek, which I explained to the kids my age that it was sort of like Italian, which made this theretofore unknown species acceptable. ‘Whites’ were WASPS, the guys in expensive suits and ties and shoes who ran things and owned everything. I didn’t know I was ‘white’ until I joined the US Navy.
